Local Farmers Market

The Pawtucket Farmers Market has a large number of stands with products from fresh juice smoothies to cosmetics.  It is held in a large building with two separate hallways to hold the vendors.  I interviewed two stands from the first hallway I visited and was able to pick their brains about their sustainable and local practices.

Virginia & Spanish Peanut Co.

The woman I spoke to at this stand was very enthusiastic about telling me about their operations and products.  She explained that while the nuts were not grown locally, they are rosted and processed into their prodcuts locally.  They offer products such as
  •  regular whole nuts
  •  peanut butter
  • dried fruit
  • seeds
  • trail mixes
  • candy
this is a wide range of products for a local company located in Providence.  The distribute these products to local restaurants, bakeries, markets, and even ice cream shops.  The pride themselves on their healthy high quality products. I was also surprised to hear that they have been in business since 1913 and are still family owned!

The next booth that i visited was quite different than Virgina & Spanish Peanut Co.  Instead of the wide product offering these people focused on only one, fresh Cranberries!

The farm that grow them is Holmes farm located in Plymouth Ma.
Their prices range from $2-$5 per pound depending on the quality and time of year.  To get their cranberries on the market they visit other framers markets and have their own farm stand on site.  The woman I talked to explained that they do not use heavy machines to package their cranberries but use compostable packages.  She also had some interesting things to tell me about their business.  For one, the employees put on a barn show which she says is quite popular in the local area.
